30 APC Members Killed In Political Violence In Rivers

30 APC Members Killed In Political Violence In Rivers

APC2-300x267
The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has said 30 of its members have so far been killed during various political crises that rocked the state in the past few months.
The chairman of the party in the state, Davis Ikanya, who stated this in a statement Thursday, however, lamented that the police had not made any arrest in connection with the killings.
He accused the members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party of being behind the killings.
“Our investigations showed that we have lost no fewer than 30 of our members and supporters in political attacks instigated in parts of the State by agents of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party,” he said.
“As painful as this is, we are miffed that no single arrest has been made by the police in connection with these politically-motivated killings calculated to intimidate and annihilate us as a political party.”
Mr. Ikanya said those behind the killings were increasingly becoming emboldened by the day as demonstrated by their brazen attack on APC gubernatorial train in Okrika, the home town of the wife of the president, Patience Jonathan, on February 18.
According to him, the shooting, bombing and successful disruption of Okrika rally was aimed principally at eliminating the APC governorship candidate, Dakuku Peterside and the successful kidnapping of Fred Ndigbara, a civil servant working in the media unit of Governor Rotimi Amaechi.
‘We indeed need no soothsayer to tell us that we are no longer protected but now endangered species,” he said. “When a political party is denied the right to canvas for votes in an assumed democratic system, as has been done to us in Okrika, we can only conclude that Nigeria is slowly but steadily slipping into a state of anarchy.
“With the lives of our people threatened on daily basis, with the security agencies looking the other way, we have every reason to wonder if the PDP-controlled Federal Government is truly serious that elections will hold in Rivers State during the general elections scheduled for March and April.”
The APC chairman commended the Inspector General of Police Suleiman Abba“for ordering full investigation into the madness that happened at Okrika where one of the policemen providing security at our rally was brutally killed”.
He also commended Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 6, Tunde Ogunsakin, for ordering Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Dan Bature, to rescue Mr. Ndigbara from the hands of those that kidnapped him while on a democratic duty during the rally of APC at Khana recently.

“We however wish to emphasise that something serious must be done soon to avoid us losing hope on the ability of the police to secure our lives,” Mr. Ikanya said.
“PDP and its promoters can’t be allowed to continue to act with impunity as if the police are an extension of the party as being boasted by some of its chieftains.
“It is very unfortunate and sad that a Police Force that is being sustained and maintained by our taxes should allow its reputation to be ruined by a group of people who do not mean well for our State.”
The APC chairman demanded “the immediate rescue of Fred Ndigbara, a harmless fellow whose only crime is belonging to APC, and that adequate protection be accorded to our gubernatorial candidate and the entire APC leadership in Rivers State.”
“We also demand a stop to the further harassment of our members. We are full citizens of this country and we can no longer tolerate being treated like second class citizens,” he said.
He said the party commiserated with the family of the slain policeman, police corporal, Ifeanyi Okorie, and assured that it would do everything humanly possible to ensure that his children are given the best education that they need to succeed in life.

Femi Fani-Kayode & Olusegun Obasanjo - March 2014 - BellaNaija
Former president of Nigeria Olusegun Obasanjo left many in shock after his dramatic exit from PDP.

Director of Media and Publicity for the People’s Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation (PDPPCO) Femi Fani-Kayode is still in shock. In a statement released on the matter, he described Obasanjo’s tearing of the PDP party card as painful and tragic. He also likened the action to biblical times when King Saul rejected David.
Here is the statement as reported by Punch:
Watching our party membership card being torn up whilst President Obasanjo was standing there and smiling was painful and tragic.
This is a party which he helped to build and on whose platform he was elected President for eight good years.
The truth is that President Obasanjo is far better and far bigger than that. Such behavior is provocative and unacceptable.
He is free to leave the party but does he have to spit in our faces by tearing up our party card in public and before the television cameras?
This knee-jerk reaction is most unlike President Obasanjo and it is very insulting. It is clear that he has burnt all the bridges and that he has left us forever.
On a personal note, I feel saddened by this but the truth is that many in our party members have heaved a huge sigh of relief. Many of us love President Obasanjo and we shall continue to do so regardless of whether he is in our party or not but tearing up that party card was too much to bear.
It spoke volumes and it was indicative of the deep hatred and contempt that he has for us and our cause.
It reminded me of the biblical passage in which King Saul rejected David and then planned to stop him from ascending to the throne by attempting to kill and destroy him.
Thankfully, the Lord was with David and not only did he deliver him from Saul, but he also crowned him King.

The Federal Government says it has decided to sell the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited in order to inject the entrepreneurial spirit into the running of the company, the Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises, Mr. Benjamin Dikki, has said.
Dikki said this when the Director-General of the National Space Research and Development Agency, Prof. Seidu Mohammed, paid him a courtesy visit, according to a statement made available to our correspondent by the Acting Head of Public Communications, BPE, Mr. Alex Okoh.
The BPE boss said it was necessary to inject entrepreneurial spirit into NigComSat in order to make the company commercially viable.
He explained that in privatising NigComSat, the security of the nation would not be compromised.
He added that the BPE would strategise and evaluate how much private sector participation would be required in the company to drive its growth.
Dikki stressed that the BPE would rely on informed guidance from key stakeholders to determine the model of privatisation to be recommended to the National Council on Privatisation for adoption in the privatisation of NigComSat.
He said that in executing the transaction, the Joint Project Delivery Team comprising the BPE, the Ministry of Communication Technology, NASRDA and other key stakeholders would be empanelled for the purpose.

According to him, Information and Communications Technology that encompasses satellite systems and telecommunications is critical to the growth of any nation.
Mohammed said the purpose of the visit was to apprise the BPE of the activities of his agency and to seek more clarification on the planned privatisation of NigComSat.
The NASRDA boss explained that there was a need for communication satellite for all Nigerians as it was vital not only for telecommunications but also for earth characterisation to support the agricultural sector of the country.
He lamented the poor funding of the science and technology sector of the country and called for more investment in the industry to boost the competitiveness of Nigeria.

An armed robbery suspect who was concerned about his child taking after him said he had to force his girlfriend to abort a three months old pregnancy.

An armed robbery suspect in the Lagos State Police Command custody, Musliyu Ahmed, says he was very careful not to father a child so that such an offspring does not follow in his footstep of being a thief.
To this end, the 23-year-old suspect who was arrested with his three-man gang by the police in Ketu area of the state, said he had to force his lover to abort a three-month pregnancy because he did not want her to give birth to an armed robber like him.
Hear the considerate suspect:
“I had to force her to go for an abortion because I do not want her to give birth to a child, who will have the blood of an armed robber. And because she understands the nature of my job, she had to obey.
I want to get married and start having kids after I quit armed robbery.”
According to Vanguard Newspaper, Ahmed, a notorious and wanted armed robber, was arrested by the police after a tip off where four locally-made guns, which he kept in his house around railway line at Bolade, Oshodi, as well as Toyota Highlander, Toyota Camry and Toyota Sienna car, were discovered from them.
Before their arrest, Ahmed and his gang were said to be terrorizing residents of the state and had successfully carried out different robbery operations in Lagos and Ijebu-ode, Ogun State

How Ibrahim Garuba Wala Rescued 500 Nigerian Schoolgirls From Boko Haram

A civil rights worker in Nigeria’s restive northeast organised the dramatic rescue of nearly 500 schoolgirls from a town under attack by Boko Haram.
2118922_nigeria10nonelrg
He has been credited with averting a repeat of the abduction, in April last year, of 279 students from the town of Chibok, most of whom are still missing.
Ibrahim Garuba Wala, better known as I G Wala, a leader of Nigeria’s National Consensus Movement (NCM) arranged for the daring evacuation of the children from deep in the bush, where they had fled with their teachers.
His rescue operation was conducted under the noses of the Nigerian military, which had reportedly refused to enter the area because it was too dangerous.
The incident happened two months ago, but has remained virtually unreported, even in Nigeria. I G Wala has provided photographs and video of the rescue, showing the 470 girls, all wearing school uniforms, running in single-file through dusty terrain, many barefoot.
Liaising with their teachers, who had alerted the NCM leader to their plight by mobile phone, I G Wala agreed a rendezvous point near a remote village accessible by road. He hurriedly arranged a fleet of passenger vans from the state capital, Gombe, 50km away, which whisked the girls to safety.
They had been boarding at the Federal Government College in Bajoga town, which had come under fierce attack by the jihadi insurgents, who entered the town in stolen Armoured Personnel Carriers. They attacked the police station, robbed the bank and looted shops.
A heavy gunfight ensued between the insurgents and the Bajoga police, alongside a few dozen soldiers based near the town. An unknown number of militants, police and military personnel were reportedly killed.
As the Boko Haram fighters entered the school compound, I G Wala was on the phone to a member of staff at the school.
“I could hear the teachers screaming at the girls just to drop everything and run. All I could think of was the girls from Chibok and I knew that we could not let this happen again,” he said. I G Wala has been an active member of the Bring Back Our Girls campaign.
He claims he begged a Nigerian military commander to send in his troops to rescue the school girls but was told that the situation there was out of control. When I G Wala insisted on leading a group of civilians to rescue the girls, the commander, he says, agreed to supply two military escort vehicles.
Pictures show a handful of armed soldiers observing the evacuation. From where the road ended, the rescuers had to continue into the bush using motorcycles borrowed from villagers.
She ran up to me, crying, and hugged me. I told her and her friends not to worry and that everything would be OK now. You should have seen their faces
The civil rights worker took with him the speaker of the Gombe State Assembly, Inuwa Garba, who has confirmed the entire account to Channel 4 News.
Mr Garba said military aircraft were bombing Boko Haram positions in the bush which is why the army commander had been reluctant to let the civilian rescue party enter the area.
While travelling by motorcycle, a preferred mode of transport for Boko Haram, they had to fly white flags so that military pilots above would not bomb them.
The girls ran a total of 15km through the bush. They had been unable to take any water and many were severely dehydrated, I G Wala said. One had been injured by treading on a spike with bare feet.
“We carried some of them on our backs for the final kilometre back to the nearest village, which was as far as our vans had been able go. We had brought with us a vehicle loaded with bottles of water for the girls.”
The children and their teachers emerged from the bush at dusk. The area was extremely insecure and “we had to get out quickly,” he said. The girls were driven to the Government Girls’ Secondary School in Gombe city.
‘Uncle!’
One of the students was I G Wala’s own niece, 13-year-old Miriam Mohammad Garuba Wala.
“When she saw me, she cried out ‘Uncle!'” he said. “She ran up to me, crying, and hugged me. I told her and her friends not to worry and that everything would be OK now. You should have seen their faces,” he said. “They were distraught.”
“When we finally arrived in Gombe, we were met by teachers and many parents of the girls from Bajoga. There was nothing quite like that feeling. It was very emotional,” said I G Wala.
“I had a sense of accomplishment on completing this task,” he said. “After the whole thing, what is important is that whenever you feel that you just have to do something, you just have to do it, regardless of risk.”

The militants have led sustained attacks in the Gombe area in recent weeks. Ten days ago, a car bomb exploded 200m from a stadium in Gombe city, just minutes after President Goodluck Jonathan had left a political rally there. The bomb killed at least one bystander and wounded seven. The previous day, a suicide bomber killed five and wounded eight near a mosque in the city.
Boko Haram, an Islamist group which has affiliated itself with Islamic State and has established a self-declared caliphate across northeastern Nigeria. The group’s name roughly translates as “Western Education is Forbidden.” It has repeatedly attacked schools and abducted children. Those who have escaped say they are used by the insurgents as porters for weapons, as cooks and sex slaves.
In February last year, the insurgents killed 59 boys at the Federal Government College of Buni Yadi in Yobe State. One month ago, an attack on a boy’s school in Potiskum, also in Yobe State, killed nearly 50, when a suicide bomber, dressed in school uniform, detonated his vest during morning assembly.
‘No thanks’
I G Wala’s civil rights organisation, the National Concensus Movement, is a coalition of youth groups across northern Nigeria. It agitates against “the gross insensitivity of the Federal Government of Nigeria,” towards those who have suffered “unimaginable atrocities and calamities.”
I G Wala said he had received no word of thanks or even acknowledgement from the Nigerian federal authorities or the military, only from the principal of the school in Bajoga. He has remained friends, he said, with the ten soldiers “who shared this ordeal” and escorted his rescue convoy.
The Nigerian military has reportedly refused to confirm that any of the events described here even happened. Channel 4 News has repeatedly called the Nigerian military spokesman but so far has not received a response.
The girls of the Federal Government College in Bajoga are now back at school. There is now a heavy military presence in the town. The day after the girls were rescued, the Nigerian military is understood to have deployed reinforcements to Bajoga town but the convoy was reportedly ambushed by the insurgents and 28 soldiers were killed.

President Goodluck Jonathan is dismissing insinuations being made that he will not accept defeat if he loses the 2015 presidential elections.
He addressed the issue during a media chat held in Abuja on Wednesday, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

“In 2011, I said that I will conduct a free and fair elections and if I lose I will happily go home and it should be recorded. As of that time no African sitting president had lost an election, but within this period a number of African sitting Presidents had lost elections.
But, I said that I wanted to create history to be the first African President that will lose election. But, let the world know that the election was a free and fair. Then, I just concluded the late President’s tenure; I was just a President for about a year, acting for some months then.
But, I said that I will be happy to go home. That this nation is more important than any human being and I still maintain.Anybody who wants to hold this office of the president or any office at all and feels that he is more important than the nation, then, he it is not quite right.
So, if as of that time I said that I was ready to conduct a free and fair election and if I lose I will go not to talk about now that Nigerians had given me the opportunity to be here for four full years.
So if the elections are conducted and I lose, of course, I will inaugurate a new government. There is no way I will say if I lose I will not hand over,” he said
The President said a lot of misinformation was being circulated by the media about the 2015 elections and urged Nigerians to shun such propaganda for the progress of the country.
He reassured Nigerians and the international community that the 2015 general elections would be conducted as planned by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
On the ongoing fight against Boko Haram, the President disclosed that the joint multi-national force, including the Nigerian military had intensified efforts to liberate all areas captured by the insurgents.
He said the Nigerian Army had taken delivery of new military hardware that would help it in its crusade against the insurgents.
He also expressed the hope that with the renewed fight against the militants, the Chibok girls might soon be rescued.

He indirectly rapped about this matter in one of the songs off his new album “Human being”, and he’s making reference to the matter again.
Arguably the best rapper in Nigeria, MI Abaga has revealed why artistes didn’t donate for OJB’s kidney complications.
MI said the fear of being ridiculed made many artistes not to give cash to the producer.
In his words: –
“First of all, I have the utmost respect for Nomoreloss as a human being.
He was definitely one of the people that had a platform that put us on. He is always showing me love, always giving me good advice.
“I haven’t seen him since, and I dread seeing him because, I can imagine that for that one comment, he’ll be disappointed. ‘Yo M.I, why didn’t you reach out to me.
“But this what happened; OJB was sick and people were trying to raise money.

I all of a sudden went 0-100 broke, like instantly. All of a sudden there was letters going out, ‘like this person didn’t contribute, why would you ask a publicist (to write a letter), and it became a big thing.
What caught me was the fact that Nomoreloss who was a fellow artiste, and he’s writing letters saying, ‘Why won’t artiste come out, why won’t D’banj speak out and say he didn’t donate this money?”
“Everybody was confused, every artiste was confused, so one or two things started happening. A certain artiste told me that he went and contributed the little money that he had, and by the time he got home, it was put in the broadcast, ‘this is how much you gave’.”
And it was embarrassing because somebody else is giving N5 million, and you have your little N100,000.
“Already, everybody was in that N100,000 category, of which there was maybe 20, 30 people. Automatically it’s like ‘Yo, I’m gonna keep my N100,000, I’m not trying to be embarrassed. On the second hand, you have artistes, like myself, who were just confused, if we were to go, what would have happened, what would we see, because it had become a media thing.
OJB later got the help he needed when the Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, funded the surgery. M.I Abaga recognizes that, but believes that more discretion and understanding should have been applied by Nomoreloss.
“At the end of the day, Nomoreloss can hold his head high because OJB did get help. But the comment in the song came from the fact that I remember reading back to back articles and people were just insulting 2face (Idibia); this guy gave you all the music and you couldn’t even even help him. People didn’t know at the time, 2face’s Dad who had later gone on to pass away from kidney complications was in India undergoing the same thing.
“I was privy to one moment when they needed money right there and then, and 2face was caught between Lagos and Abuja, he was trying to get money for people to send. It was rough for some people.
People had issues every day, you know Iyanya lost most of his family in one year, but we never see that side. What we see is what you should be able to do based on our perception of who you are.
“At least not from a fellow artiste. A fellow artiste should understand, and thankfully it didn’t become controversial. That’s the truth of what I wanted to say in the moment.”

Corruption is defined as “dishonest or fraudulent conduct by those in power, typically involving bribery”. The definition is simple and we all know what it is, yet Mr. President has spent the last several minutes of his media chat explaining to Nigerians what it is, suggesting we are all somehow confused about this.

Do Not Die For A Mediocre Performer – Obasanjo To Nigerians

At the launch of his book, My Watch, in London today, former President Olusegun Obasanjo urged Nigerians not to die for a mediocre performer, and said he maintains the statement credited to him of his endorsement of APC presidential candidate, Gen Buhari.

What I said and I maintain that and I will say it again and I will do it. When the time comes for me to vote, I will consider the track record of all the candidates that are contesting and I will assess and based on my assessment for who I believe have the best track record to perform the job of the Nigerian president, then he will have my vote and if anybody should know what the job of the Nigerian president requires, I should know.
“And there is no sentiment in the affairs of Nigeria.Nigeria is a population of 180million and you wouldn’t have anybody other than one person or two persons that can run the affairs of Nigeria? What the hell are we talking about? For me there are millions who can run the affairs of Nigeria that are not even coming out.
So why should you die on behalf of one who is probably performing as a mediocre.
With all due respect. Nigeria, if you love it, you would look for the best for Nigeria and I don’t believe that at this point in time we have the best” he said

PDP Accuses Jega Of Meeting APC Leaders In Dubai

jega
The Peoples Democratic Party on Wednesday raised fresh allegations aiming at discrediting the National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, over the conduct of the elections.
At a crowded press conference in Abuja, the Director of Media and Publicity of the PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, alleged that Jega had meetings with some unnamed leaders of the main opposition party, the All Progressives Congress, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
But the commission said it was not in its character to join issues with political parties.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman of the commission, Mr. Kayode Idowu, said this when contacted to react to the allegation.
Idowu said, “INEC doesn’t join issues with political parties, because the commission is a dispassionate umpire.”
However, the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, dismissed the allegation as utter nonsense and irritable.
Speaking in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents on Wednesday, Mohammed said, “I’m in Abuja with some of our leaders. Baba Bisi Akande is here, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is here, former Governor Kayode Fayemi is here. Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is in Lagos.
“No leader of the APC is outside the country. So, tell me who is Jega meeting? Is it members of our NEC? Not one of our leaders is outside the country. This people are paranoid. We are preparing for our NEC meeting. We have some of our governors here. The PDP is paranoid.”
But Fani-Kayode also alleged that the meeting was aimed at making sure that those who had yet to get the Permanent Voter Cards were denied the opportunity of receiving them.

The former Minister of Aviation put the number of those voters at 23 million.
Fani-Kayode added that the commission was scheming out voters in states and areas where he said supporters of the ruling party were.
Besides, he alleged that the PVCs were still at China and had yet to be imported to Nigeria.
He said, “Pieces of information at our disposal have shown that Jega has had meetings with the APC stalwarts in Dubai and other cities in the world to perfect this wanton conspiracy against 23 million eligible voters.
“Besides, we have information that the PVCs that Nigerians are scrambling for are not in Nigeria and will not arrive before the elections.
“These PVCs are still in China and Jega has strategically delayed their arrival to suit his electioneering permutations.”
Asked to provide proof about the alleged Dubai meeting, Fani-Kayode refused.
Fani-Kayode however said that Jega must also show Nigerians proof that the Chinese company printing the PVCs had been paid in full by disclosing the total contract sum and the amount paid to date.
He also demanded that Jega should show proof of arrival or expected date of arrival of all PVCs for the elections and that he should equally tell Nigerians how he could have distributed 23 million PVCs within five days to election if there hadn’t been postponement.
He said it was wrong for the commission to have claimed that the election was shifted due to insecurity, adding that the electoral body was not fully ready for the election.
“The matter is that INEC has failed in its responsibility to produce and distribute PVCs to about 34 per cent of registered voters who would require the cards to vote in the elections.
“This brings us to the issue of statistics of PVC distribution and collection which we believe Jega, as a person acting in concert with some forces of retrogression, is playing games with.
“We express our concerns today that Jega may have decided to aid the APC to rig the forthcoming elections through the manipulation of the production, distribution and collection of PVCs, such that emerging trends have consistently shown calculated attempts to deprive parts of the country that would traditionally vote for President Jonathan of their PVCs.”
