Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets have progressed to the last eight of the ongoing FIFA U17 world cup after mauling Australia 6-0 in their round of 16 game early Thursday morning.
The defending champions kicked off their campaign with two wins from the group stage but crumbled under the annointing of the croatian national team the second time between a month- first in a pre-tournament championship in Korea.

Victor Oshimen opened scoring for the Nigerian contingents in the 22nd minute of the game after two clear wasted efforts by the Aussies in the game.
Three minutes later, the team’s captain, Kelechi Nwakali doubled Nigeria’s lead from the penalty spot after Bamgboye fouled in the box recklessly by two onrushing defenders.
Victor Osimhen, who is the top scorer at the moment, scored Nigeria’s 3rd goal of the night, his second in the game in the 73rd minute and completed his hatrick 6 minutes later.
First, substitute Essien was on hand to head home from close range before Chukwueze’s missile completed the rout against the side who came into the game with the ambition of breaking their jinx against the defending champions.
The Golden Eaglets, who have now scored 14 goals, have set up a date with Brazil in the quarter finals on Sunday in their attempt to retain the title they won two years back at the United Arab Emirates.

UNIJOS: Bogged down by incessant crisis

University of Jos (UNIJOS) teachers are on strike again. YUSUFU AMINU IDEGU examines some of the issues causing unrest in the university.
There has been disquiet at the University of Jos (UNIJOS) since the beginning of the year.  Teachers are not happy. Last Thursday, the institution’s 1,090 teachers began a strike, which the local chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) described as “total, comprehensive and indefinite.”

In the last four years, there has been at least one strike per year over a variety of issues, especially welfare. This is what the Vice-Chancellor (VC), Prof Hayward Babale Mufayai has been contending with in the past four years.
Students have a grouse with the school management on what they described as harsh policies which culminated in the disbandment of their union and the suspension of the president, Abel Nok Nduu. The implication of the suspension is that the final year Law student will not graduate with his classmates. Furthermore, he will not proceed to Law School to complete his professional legal training.
The students’ problem with the management is a spillover of last November’s riot over lack of facilities and fee hike.  They had asked the university to stop the N10,000 yearly development levy and the N4,000 ICT fee they pay without enjoying facilities.  They also complained about the late registration fee of N10,000, which they wanted removed; and the N25,000 acceptance fee for new students and hostel accommodation fee of N13,400, which they wanted reduced.
Some school properties were destroyed during the riot. This forced the management to shut down the university. When it was reopened, the management imposed N6,000 levy on students to replace the damaged properties.
Most students are afraid to talk about Abel’s suspension for fear of the sledge hammer of the VC. But the courageous among them, condemned the punishment.
One of such is Francis Zitta, a 400-Level Law student.   “The VC’s decision to suspend our president is too much punishment for one offence. The VC made us to pay a riot levy of N6,000; he also disbanded the SUG Exco.  As if that was not enough, he suspended the final year student so that the boy will graduate. I see this as wickedness.  Some of us are asking, how many punishments should the boy serve for one offence,” he said.
Racheal Ibrahim, a 400-Level student of Sociology, said the levy was enough to atone for their wrongs.
“All of us students have been punished for the riot by paying a damage levy of 6,000, why should the VC single out the SUG leader for another punishment?  To me, that is wickedness.  We all did the riot; it was not the fault of our SUG. So I advise the VC to withdraw the suspension to allow the boy enjoy his graduation after spending five years in the university,” she said.
ASUU Chairman, UNIJOS branch, Dr. Christopher Piwuna, faulted the levy, describing it as too high. He claimed that the damaged facilities were replaced by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).
Piwuna, who sympathised with the students, said: “The forceful collection of N6,000 is another exploitation by management because the properties damaged were estimated to cost a little above N10 million, but the management eventually made about N200 million from the levy. Meanwhile, the replacement of the damaged properties was carried out by TETFund The university management are yet to account for how they spent the riot levy collected from each students.”
The teacher wondered why the students did not hold the management accountable for the levy.
“I expect students to ask management to account for that levy they paid in January this year.  Their SUG president, a final year student from the Law department was suspended for no given reason, and the students are not asking questions. The university community is not well, all is not well with us, a lot of things are going wrong” said Piwuna.
The Nation gathered that the management has yet to replace any of the broken louvres.
On the lecturers’ issue with the management, Piwuna said it had to do with the nonpayment of some outstanding allowances.
He said: “The dispute started from June 2013 after the six-month national strike by ASUU. As a solution to the problems, the Federal Government released the sum of N1.6 billion to the management of University of Jos to settle outstanding payment of allowances and other claims of academic and non-academic staff.
“The school management created problems in the sharing formula between its academic staff and non-academic staff. ASUU protested that immediately. In the lopsided payment made by management, as I am talking to you now, 300 ASUU members have not gotten their money since the last payment in 2013.
“But instead of management to even talk of resolving the lopsided payment, they came up with claims that some ASUU members were over paid in the process. We agreed with management to verify it and make the deductions accordingly. The deductions made by management in the so-called over payment even overshot the original sum paid to members. That also formed part of the unresolved controversies.”
Another issue ASUU is fighting for is for the university to absorb some lecturers that have been working on part-time basis for the last 10 years.
“There is also the unresolved demand by lecturers of School of Remedial Studies and Centre for Continuing Education of the University to be absorbed into their mother department of the university.  It has been a long term issue that has remained unresolved for more than 10 years. Two Vice Chancellors have served and gone without giving attention to this demand.  Such attitude of management kills the morale of staff.  We have been pleading with the present management to see reasons to absorb this category of workers, but they turned a deaf ear to our plea.
“Apart from that there is the issue of unpaid Postgraduate Supervision Allowance which has not been paid since 2005. There are 157 lecturers affected by that. We complained but school authority never bothered,” he said.
Furthermore, the lecturers are complaining about their remuneration being lower than their counterparts in other Federal Government
“There is the lingering issue of disparity of salaries among federal Universities.  That of University of Jos is lower than the rest and we wonder why the disparity. We keep asking, ‘is this not a federal university like others, why can’t we receive what our colleagues in other federal universities are collecting as salaries?’ When our members here go on sabbatical leave in other Federal Universities, they collect good salary, but when they come back here they get something less, why is that so? That issue remains unresolved by the UNIJOS management.
The ASUU chairman said efforts made to resolve the issues with the management have proved abortive.
“It will interest you to know that within the last six month alone, we have sent 13 letters to management over these unresolved issues.  We have also met with the Vice Chancellor five times.  Our zonal ASUU in Bauchi has visited the VC twice over these same issues.  We have written twice to the pro-chancellor. In May this year, we gave a 21-day strike notice to management. In spite of all these efforts, we were never taken serious by the school authority. We were shocked when the management came out to deny even the agreement we reached with them on how to resolve the issues. The last agreement between us and management on payment of these allowances was August 28, 2015, but as I’m talking to you now in October, the management has failed to meet up the agreement,” said Piwuna.
However, the school authority believed the ASUU members had no reasons to embark on strike action.  The Vice Chancellor was unavailable to respond to the issues.  However, the Registrar, Jilli Dandam, acknowledged only two of the issues ASUU raised – nonpayment of earned allowances, and the postgraduate supervision allowance.
In a statement, the Registrar said: “The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) University of Jos branch on Thursday 22 October, 2015 forwarded to the Vice Chancellor, a letter informing him of embarking on a strike action which it described as total, indefinite and comprehensive. The letter did not state the reasons for embarking on the strike action.
“However, management will want to inform all staff, students, members of the public and other stakeholders that ASUU University of Jos had been dialoguing on two issues with management – the disbursement of earned academic allowance and the payment of Postgraduate Supervision Allowance (PSA).
“On the disbursement of academic allowance, council set up a technical committee chaired by a former ASUU chairman to resolve the lingering issue. Council also directed the implementation of the report believing that it will put to rest the issue of disbursement of earned academic allowance.
The Registrar also accused the union for being economical with the truth about the number of academics affected by the unpaid allowances.
“The ASUU University of Jos, without notice, reported management to its national headquarters alleging that 681 members of ASUU were being owed earned academic allowance. Efforts to make ASUU submit the names for verification and reconciliation was resisted, claiming that the lists was contained in the council committee’s report. This is not correct. There was no such list in the council committee report chaired by the former chairman of ASUU.
Dandam also noted that the university has been paying the PSA gradually to the workers involved.
“On the issue of payment of Postgraduate Supervision Allowance, the ASUU University of Jos protested nonpayment of the allowance from 2004 to 2009 and 2013 to 2014. Management drew the attention of ASUU EXCO that the matter was being processed as the claims were being forwarded in batches to bursar for payment. As at the time management met with ASUU executive, nine members of staff had been paid. As at 15th September, 2015 when the Federal Government directive on Treasury Single Account became effective, an additional 50 out of 150 staff have been paid while 68 have been processed and ready for payment. ASUU is aware that for the past six weeks, no federal university of ministerial department in this country has had access to any fund from the Treasury Single Account apart from salaries.
However, as the strike lasts, the students are at the receiving end. They now have to prepare to prolong their stay in the school beyond their calculation. The most hit by the strike are the Postgraduate students who thought of rounding up their academic program by December 2015. They are lamenting that their academic programme will be extended to 2016.
A parent, Mr Samson Dusu said of the closure: “No one is happy with this strike, the university management and ASUU don’t always consider the interest of other stakeholders while taking decision for strike, it is not in the interest of any parent for their children to stay longer than four years for a degree program. But in Unijos, you only know when you enter, you can never tell when you will graduate due it incessant strike action.

Senate queries approval of N63.5bn contract for Abuja Airport’s 2nd runway

The Senate, yesterday, queried the approval of N63.5 billion for the construction of the second Runway for the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, saying it was an attempt to ‘steal and rape’ Nigerians of the country’s wealth.
The Senate called on the federal government to reduce the unrealistic cost of construction and for the government to monitor the contract award process.

Presenting the motion, Senator Melaye said that the contract for the construction of the runway was previously cancelled by the last administration after allegation of over inflation of contract.

Melaye, said that the contract was awarded by the Federal Executive Council, FEC, at N64 billion after ratification by the Bureau for Public Procurement, BPP, contended that there was also  the need  for the construction of a second runway since, according to him, “the existing one is not only bad but inadequate.”

He said: “The publication that the contract is already undergoing review and to be awarded at N63.5 billion as published by newspapers is another attempt to steal and rape Nigerians of our common patrimony. Further convinced by the fact that the entire Gombe Airport with 36km runway cost of N8.2 billion; Jigawa Airport cost N12 billion, Enugu Airport was constructed and expanded at 13 billion naira and Akwa Ibom Airport at N18.05 billion .
“This astronomical amount is about four times the cost of constructing a brand new airport in Nigeria. As a representative of the people, we must advise that due process  and strict adherence to Public Procurement Act be observed in the said contract of the Second  Abuja  Airport  Runaway. If this not brought to attention of the government now, there may be another fraud in the making, given the comparative analysis of cheaper cost across  the country. “
The Senate President also complained about the cost and said that  there was the need to stop what he described as the reckless expenditures, while awarding contracts in the country.

Minister’s manifesto for education and health
SIR: Outgoing Vice Chancellor of the Premier University, University of Ibadan, Professor Isaac Folorunso Adewole’s brilliant articulation of his thoughts while responding to the questions by Senators has left to one in doubt that President Muhammadu Buhari has not made a mistake by seeking out the Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology to be part of his change agents. It was a revealing engagement between the nominee (now confirmed) and members of the senate as the education and health sectors were dissected.
Adewole did not only show the magnitude of the problem, but as a scientist, he offered what needed to be done to bring the nation out of the current peculiar mess. His over an hour embodied not only the problems but ways of addressing the identified gaps in our education and health sectors. His narratives painted the picture of a nation with leadership that abdicates responsibilities to her people. Coming to serve in a government that made him ‘fly out’ of the country when he led a nationwide strike in the health sector 30 years ago, Adewole submitted that ‘I must regrettably say that not much has changed but we can better the situation, we can work together and there is a ray of hope in the horizon’.
The problem of chronic under-funding of the education sector was discussed by the award-winning university administrator. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) had embarked on a strike in 2013 to protest infrastructural decay, harsh working environment, and ill-motivated staff among others. Major issues on health at the screening revolved around abortion, inter-professional rivalry in the health sector and what Professor Adewole described as looming danger in cancer epidemic owing to the demographic transition and almost inactive lifestyle of Nigerians. Senators competed to ask questions on cancer. They got more than what they wanted and should now resolve to put money in health for the building of national cancer centre and revitalization of the Health system.
It is obvious that so many things have been deliberately neglected by previous governments in health and education sectors. Health tourism is growing and people are losing confidence in our educational system. The Senate should go beyond saying Professor Adewole is a qualified man for the job but must play their part by voting 26 percent UNESCO benchmark for funding education. It is a disservice to the nation if National Assembly members and the leadership do not consume our education and/or jet-out for treatment in a country that cares for her people due to the distrust they have in the two sectors. While I have no doubt that Professor Adewole will deliver in either health or education ministry, he needs to be given all the necessary support (financial, environment, political etc) to work for Nigerians particularly the masses who are usually the victims of bad governance.

Audu’s campaign: Kogi govt wasted over N500b
•Prince Audu
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kogi State has alleged that the state government wasted close to N500 billion under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration.
The party, in a statement by the Head of Media, Prince Abubakar Audu Governorship Campaign Organisation, Dr. Tom Ohikere, said despite the dearth of social infrastructure, the PDP administration under Governor Idris Wada wasted over N.5trillion.

The statement reads: “The PDP government in kogi State has received and spent over  N500 billion since 2003 without financial accounting. The administration has been operating as if the state is a personal enterprise.
“The Wada government has refused to render financial records to date, thereby negating the principle of stewardship and accountability.
“It is neither a responsible nor a responsive government. It is a government deficient in integrity and bereft of modern democratic principles.
Since the advent of the Wada administration, the financial account of Kogi State has been shrouded in secrecy. It is being managed in a mafia style. Democratic government anywhere in the world is about the people and government is about accountability.”
The PDP, however, told the APC to desist from spreading false information.
It said the party should address what it described as the burden of corruption hanging on its governorship candidate.
The Chief Communication Manager to the Governor, Mr. Phrank Shaibu, said the choice of Prince Abubakar Audu as the APC standard-bearer negated President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption stance.
He said: “His ambition is a clash as it relates to the stand of his party. It is a slap on the Buhari anti-corruption campaign. Yes, there is a belief that a man/woman is presumed innocent until he or she is proved guilty.
“There is a moral burden here. The case has been on for as long as you can think, with Prince Audu using frivolous injunctions to stall justice.
“Now, he is trying to hide under the anti-corruption mantra to seek immunity from justice.
“Simply put, let our dear President Buhari detach himself from Audu’s political quest. His dusty past of corruption is a virus that will defame the President’s stance on anti-corruption.
“Audu’s issue should be avoided because this is not about today’s rampant politically-motivated accusations. The records on Audu date back to 10 years before the formation of the APC. If the APC is not careful, Audu’s ambition will ruin Mr. President’s good agenda on change.

Economic policies may hurt ‘in short term’, says Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday reviewed his administration’s economic policies, warning that they may be hurtful “in the short run”.
In the long run, things will be better, the President said in New Delhi, India, where he is attending the Third Indian-Africa Forum. He was addressing the Chief Executives of Indian companies with interests in Nigeria.

Despite the fall in oil prices, his administration, he said, remained committed to maintaining macro-economic stability and improving investors’ confidence in Nigeria.
The economy, the President said, should not suffer unduly from low oil prices because Nigeria is blessed with human and material resources.
“What is required of us, to which we are strongly committed, is the implementation of tight expenditure controls, effective fiscal and monetary policies, including the husbandry of scarce resources which our introduction of the Single Treasury Account has began to address.
We are aware some of these measures may hurt operations of some businesses in the short term, but we believe they are right for a sustainable economy,” he said.
Stressing that India has been a dependable ally of Nigeria, Buhari urged the Chief Executives to expand their companies’ investments in Nigeria  ”so that we can, together, turn our engagements into a win-win situation for our two countries.”
He added: “We can increase and diversify the current volume of our bilateral trade beyond US$16.36 billion, and diversify to other critical sectors such as agriculture; green technologies in power generation; infrastructure; information and communications technologies; the services sector; education; industry, especially textiles and solid minerals among others.”
Buhari also urged the Indian CEOs to accept the changes in policy being introduced by his administration and observe all extant Nigerian laws in running their businesses in the country.
The President warned that his administration would not tolerate the importation of sub-standard goods, especially foods and medicines, into Nigeria.
The government’s plan to sustain the current naira value was criticised by Emir of Kano Muhammad Sanusi II as unsustainable.
He also warned against retaining petrol subsidy. But labour has taken the emir up on his position, saying  removal of subsidy and naira devaluation will hurt the poor.
The President also yesterday had bilateral talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
India pledged to buy more oil from Nigeria without intermediaries to make the process more transparent.
The Prime Minister begged Buhari to help repatriate India’s 11-man crew in detention in Nigeria.
In the alternative, he surged that the trial of the crew can be fast tracked.
Also, at a meeting with the Nigerian Community, Buhari said there was no going back on the trial of looters.
He said his government may turn the tide against Boko Haram by the end of this year.
The Joint Secretary (East and Southern Africa) of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs,  Amb. Tanmay Lal, said: “The bilateral talks were smoother because the President of Nigeria has long-standing association with India. He trained in India when he was a military officer.
“The President of Nigeria said India has become the largest oil importer of Nigeria’s crude oil, replacing the United States. There was discussion on oil sector in the meeting and the prospect of India buying more oil from Nigeria.
“ Also there was strategic discussion on cooperation in the field of defence.
”The PM raised the specific issue of 11 crew members who have been in jail in Nigeria for some time. He made a personal request, if the judicial process can be expedited and if they can be repatriated. The Nigerian President said he will immediately look into it.”
A high-ranking diplomat said: “The  Prime Minister said India is ready to double its oil imports from Nigeria if there is more transparency. The Indian government wants to buy directly from the Federal Government and pay through the Single Treasury Account (TSA) instead of the practice of directing us to intermediaries.”
Buhari  also said there was no going back on his anti-graft war.
He told the Nigerian Community in India: “We will continue to prosecute those who have been indicted for corrupt practices and ensure  that stolen funds are recovered, to serve as deterrent to others who nurse the ambition of seeking public office solely for illegal personal gain.
”The anti-corruption campaign will be on-going for many years. We are  committed to the enthronement of good governance that plugs the loopholes in public sector accounting, and the use of scarce resources for public good.
”We are determined to demonstrate exemplary leadership that will make our citizens to change their ways in a manner that lays a solid foundation for reconstruction and development.
”I am confident that our approach to fighting corruption through value re-orientation, improved internal processes and systems and  the rule of law, as well as  enhancing the capacity of the various anti-corruption agencies and institutions, will prove more enduring in addressing this evil.
The President said he was aware of the expectations of Nigerians who elected him on the platform of change, integrity, probity and accountability, and was therefore doing his utmost best to meet those expectations.
”I wish to assure you that we shall do our best  to  fix the economy, create jobs for the teeming population of our youths and make the home environment safe, secure and more attractive to Nigerians outside the country like your good selves.
”On the economy, our aim is to address the challenge of infrastructure in all its ramifications, especially power and transportation. We are seeking to create jobs through agriculture, mining, industrial value-addition and the promotion of small scale enterprises.”
“I wish to assure you that we shall do our best to fix the economy, create jobs for the teeming population of our youths and make the home environment safe, secure and more attractive to Nigerians outside the country like your good selves.
On Boko Haram, Buhari said: ”We are also  taking steps to address criminality across the country. We are tackling the menace of terrorism posed by Boko Haram head on and  I am pleased to note that though sporadic attacks on soft targets have not stopped, the over-all capacity of Boko Haram to hold territory and determine the course of the conflict has been severely degraded.
”If the current positive trends are maintained, we are confident that by the end of this year, we would have succeeded in permanently turning the tide against the Boko Haram insurgents in Nigeria.

Huge welcome for Ooni

Ile Ife, the historic town in Osun State, was aglow yesterday as it welcomed home its monarch, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi.
Ogunwusi will bear the title of Ojaja II. He was named the Ooni on Monday to succeed  Oba Okunade Sijuwade Olubuse II, who died on July 28.

Ife was in a festive mood. Men, women and children were gaily dressed. Markets and shops were closed.
There were no vehicles on the road. It looked like a public holiday in the ancient town.
Oba Ogunwusi, in immaculate white, arrived at Moro Junction where he had his first stopover, around 1pm.
He proceeded to the Ife-Ibadan toll gate, where many of his subjects joined his motorcade.
The Ooni swept into town in royal splendour, passing through May Fair, Lagere, Iremo, Enuwa, Moore to get to his Agbedegbede Ojaja family compound in the Giesi Ruling House, where he was installed as Sooko.
Ife tradition demands that he should first beSooko (head) of his ruling house before mounting the Ooni stool.
The Ooni was received by the Ife Traditional Council led by the Lowa of Ife, High Chief Joseph Ijaodola, at the Ile-Ife end of the Ibadan expressway.
At the toll gate, Ogunwusi switched cars.
He stood on the open roof of the car to acknowledge cheers from the mammoth crowd.
Before his arrival, all the roads leading to the Ooni Palace, Lagere area, Giesi Ruling House, among others, were filled with his subjects.
Security was heavy. The police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Federal Road Safety Corps and local vigilante were at strategic locations to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
The security agents had a hectic time controlling the crowd.
Two persons died in a head-on collision between an Honda Saloon car and a motorcycle on Ibadan road. The men on the motorcycle died on the spot; the motorist was injured.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo was in the Giesi Ruling House to witness Ogunwusi’s installation as Sooko.
Obasanjo was accompanied by his friend, Otunba Oyewole Fasawe.
The Ooni raised clenched fist to acknowledge cheers as he moved to the Obalufe’s palace at Iremo to perform some rites before going to his family compound.
He arrived at the Giesi ruling house few minutes after 5pm and was installed theSooko. The installation was held in the inner room of the hall at the ruling house. It was conducted by Sooko Adeleke Adewoyin, who led all Ife Sooko to the ceremony.
After the ceremony, the Ooni was led to an unknown destination.
But it was gathered that he retired to his private residence last night before moving into Iledi, at a forest on Ilesa road, where some rituals will be performed till 2am.
The other rituals and rites, according to a source, will continue at the Ilofi, where a series of initiations and further rituals will be done in the next 21 days.
During his stay at Ilofi, the Ooni will be taken through the rudiments of his duties as the custodian of Yoruba culture and tradition.
Ogunwusi will bear the tittle Ojaja II, Secretary to the Giesi Ruling House, Adelowu Ogunleye, announced yesterday.
The Ojaja family is part of the Giesi ruling house.
“The Kabiyesi has promised to further the development of Ife and provide jobs for the unemployed,” he said.
“I am sure he will explain better when he is finally installed.”
Immediate past Chairman of Federal Roads Maintenance Agency  (FERMA) Olajide Adeniji, yesterday congratulated the Ogunwusi on his appointment.
He urged the Ooni to see the unity of the Yoruba nation as a priority, adding: “The role of traditional rulers in nation-building cannot be over-emphasised. Of course, our traditional rulers should use their good offices to minimise the use of religion and politics as instruments of violence. I humbly urge your imperial majesty to please see your appointment as a call to service and to the upliftment of humanity.
“Build a solid super structure on a super foundation laid by your predecessors,  Oba Adesoji Aderemi  and Oba Okunade Sijuwade.”
Also yesterday, Sooko Adewoyin said it was time to support the Ooni in the interest of Ife and the Yoruba race.
Speaking with reporters at the Giesi Ruling House Compound, he said he had come on behalf of all Sooko of Ife to solidarise with the Ooni.

Also, Sooko Bunmi Adegoke of Lafogido, said: “We believe we have been cheated and the court is the best place to judge whether we are right or wrong and the court has spoken. Let us all Ife support the new Ooni, you can’t be a rebel because anything can happen. Reason for our acceptance and support.”

Peterside hails Rivers tribunal verdict
Dr Dakuku Peterside, governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress APC in the April election inRivers has described the verdict of the Rivers State Election Petitions Tribunal as victory not just for democracy but also for justice and the rule of law.

He said; “This judgment is resounding because at last, we are vindicated. The journey no doubt was tortuous but the suffering was worthwhile. It also shows that perseverance pays. This judgment no doubt also shows that we must continue to have faith in our judiciary as the last hope of the common man. I congratulate the good and long-suffering people of Rivers State for standing up to impunity, Executive rascality and intimidation of the highest order. As we look forward to a fair contest, I urge our people to be calm and to continue to pray for our dear state.
“Under the last administration, our people suffered all forms of indignities because of their political leaning. Democracy is essentially about freedom and we must never, under any circumstance lose our freedom again.
“This verdict has put a nail on the coffin of electoral rascality, electoral violence, election fraud and impunity. It has restored the faith of the resilient people of Rivers State in the electoral process as a fair means of choosing leaders. I particularly thank the people of Rivers State for their resilience throughout this period.
“Let us all join hands with the Buhari-led government as it tackles impunity, incompetence, unemployment and all the vices that remind us of the sorry story of our recent history. Surely, Rivers State is on the march again and we must all lend our support.”

My new book will “draw blood” - Prof Soyinka

My new book will
Playwright and Essayist, Prof. Wole Soyinka, on Saturday disclosed that he wants to “draw blood” with his latest book, InterInventions.
Soyinka said it is his own tool of “vengeance” against “unprovoked assault of public lies,” many of which were directed against him.

The Nobel Laureate who disclosed this in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital, in his remark at the formal inauguration of The Wole Soyinka Foundation, a retreat haven for writers, described InterInventions as “the nastiest book” he has ever written.
The 130  – page literary work  – InterInventions, Between Defective Memory and Public Lie, A Personal Odyssey in The Republic of Liars, was presented to the public at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta, by the Edo state governor, Adams Oshiohmole.
Soyinka said the book is “so truthful that it hurts” and recommended it to people who “feel vengeful” towards purveyors of public lies because of its expected therapeutic value.
“(InterInventions), it is the nastiest book I have ever written. It is so truthful that it hurts… it is my vengeance against public lies. It is not one of the butterfly books, no, it is not a butterfly book.
“I want to draw blood (with it). I’m warning all of you, if you feel vengeful, read this book and you will be alright. It is like homeopathic medicine,” Soyinka said.
He noted that public lies have become an industry of sort, multiplying itself and is even being made worse by the internet age technology that is now facilitating the predisposition for lies.
In page seven of the book, he decried public lies – “lies of staggering impudence, especially considering the fact that, in most cases, both victims and their traducers are still living.”
According to him, there is the need for a “ritual of  public purgation where both sides – such victims of lies and the traducers, are brought together before the public tribunal for the world to know the truth.
In the book, Soyinka also gave insight into lies, allegedly, told him by some individuals, past nation leaders including former Governor Gbenga Daniel, stating in first paragraph of page 82 that “it was a great fun(for him, Soyinka) to watch him(Daniel) lie his head off.”
He revealed why he was able to keep his sanity as a creative writer in midst of “unprovoked assault” of public lies, saying he “would have gone insane” if he had not found a serene place to hide himself while doing his creative work.
In his remark, Oshiohmole described Soyinka as a great and relentless fighter, saying the nation needs social warriors who speak the truth without giving a hoot to whose ox is gored.
The Governor who attended the event in the company of his wife, added that The Wole Soyinka Foundation is a worthy cause that should be identified with by Nigerians.
In attendance at the Foundation inauguration were Govetnor Ibikunle Amosun represented by the Secretary to the state government, Taiwo Adeoluwa, ex – governors Rotimi Amaechi, Dr Kayode Fayemi, Donald Duke, Mr Odia Ofeimun, the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo among others.
