Abraham rejects Ondo APC primaries, heads for appeal committee

23:28 Add Comment
A Governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Segun Abraham has rejected the outcome of the last Saturday’s governorship primary election of the party.
Abraham who came second in the election with a total votes of 635 had earlier congratulated the winner, Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), but later said his decision was hinged on alleged irregularities that marred the poll conducted by a committee headed by the Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Mohammed Abubarka.
The Ikare-Akoko born politician has appealed against the outcome of the election through a petition forwarded to the tribunal set up by the APC national secretariat.

According to a statement titled “that our democracy may endure” signed by the Director-General of his campaign organization, Prince Olu Adegboro, Abraham noted that the outcome of the election was unacceptable to him, because of ‘anomalies’ that characterised the exercise.
The statement read further “It is no longer news that as a true democrat, imbued with the best spirit of sportmanship, I congratulated Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, who purportedly emerged as the candidate of the APC in the September 3, Gubernatorial Primary election in Ondo State in the face of palpable disbelief and surprise on the outcome of the Primary election by my numerous supporters.
“The news however is that, sordid and staggering facts have since emerged on how the process leading to the primary election was manipulated and compromised. It is now beyond doubt that the delegate list used on the day of the primary election was doctored and strangely injected with a mind bogging number of delegates who are neither executive members of our party nor statutory delegates.
“To say the least, the manipulation of the delegate list, highly skewed accreditation process and the entire processes leading to the conduct of the primary election has cast the darkest stain on the result of the primary election held on the 3rd September, 2016.
“Against this background, coupled with the change and integrity that our party preaches and practices, and having widely consulted with my numerous supporters, I have reached the hour of decision to fall back on the internal mechanism of our great party to seek redress so that the end of justice will be served and more importantly, our democracy may endure.
“To this end, the outcome of the September 3, APC Governorship primaries in Ondo State is unacceptable and I hereby appeal against same.
“The allegations that have sadly pelted the supposedly free and fair Saturday exercise, where 24 aspirants battled to nick the party’s ticket, include but not limited to, delegates list tampering, fake delegates incursion, disenfranchising of rightful delegates, smuggling of illegal ballot papers into ballot boxes.”
Abraham said the official petition would soon be forwarded to the Electoral Appeal Committee to back up the appeal.

Foreign investors to get visa on arrival – Osinbajo

23:20 Add Comment
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday said government was seriously considering the option of issuing visa on arrival to foreign investors and other businessmen coming to the country.
He spoke in Abuja at the public presentation and first annual lecture of “The Interview” Magazine.
He said the issuance of visa will help remove many perceived bureaucratic bottlenecks that had clogged the business climate in Nigeria.

According to him, President Muhammadu Buhari has already inaugurated a committee on enabling business environment.
The responsibility of the committee, which he chairs, was to move Nigeria up by 50 spaces on the World Bank’s ease of doing business index before the end of 2017.
Speaking on the theme of the event: “Why start-ups fail and strategies to save them,” the vice president said it was the responsibility of the government to create the enabling environment for business to thrive, assuring that the present administration was committed to doing just that.
He said: “The business of the government is to provide the right environment for start-ups. The problem in most cases and which we have experienced in Nigeria is that our approval processes are needlessly difficult.

Rohr picks Kalaba, Sunzu as Zambia key players

Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, has picked skipper Rainford Kalaba and France-based Stoppila Sunzu as the players to watch when Nigeria visits Zambia for next month’s World Cup qualifier.
Nigeria opens its 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign on October 3 in Zambia.
Rohr said he has good information on the former African Nations Cup (AFCON) champions.

“They (Zambia) have some really good players – Kalaba is the best. He scores goals always for the team and I also know Sunzu very well because he plays in France,” africanFootball.com quoted Rohr as saying during a visit to the Secretary General of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Mohammed Sanusi, in Abuja.
He assured that Super Eagles will prepare very well for the World Cup qualifiers because “we have to be in Russia.”
“We will need all our best players to be at their very best,” he said.
“We had a good list for the Tanzania match but a couple of players were injured and we will like to look at those ones as well.
“The focus is to strengthen the spine of the team and ensure we can beat any team.
“The confidence has not been there because the team failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations. But when results start to come, the confidence will return.”
Sanusi pledged full support for the coach and his backroom staff.
“We have immense confidence in you and your staff. We will not dabble into your technical area,” he said.
“Our responsibility is to provide the right atmosphere to make you succeed. We see that you are a gentleman but will not take your simplicity for granted.

The convoy of the Lagos State governor, Mr. Akinwumi Ambode fortunately saved several motorists from being attacked by a gang of armed robbers, who struck at Long Bridge on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The incident which took place last Thursday at about 8 pm was said to have been carried out by armed robbers who were dressed as Police officers.

According to an eyewitness, the notorious robbers had blocked the expressway forcing motorists to stop which gave them the opportunity to carry out their dangerous act of robbing innocent motorists.

However, luck ran out on the robbers when the convoy of Gov. Ambode, was returning from Osun State where Ambode had attended the President Buhari’s visit, realized that the police officers were fake and were in fact robbing people. The Governor's entourage engaged the robbers in a gun fight.

Ondo Poll: Another APC aspirant withdraws from race, backs Abraham

23:46 Add Comment
Ahead of today’s primary election of the All Progressives Congress in Ondo State, another aspirant, Mr. Derin Adesida yesterday withdrew from the race to clinch the ticket of the party.

Adesida, who represented Akure South/Akure North federal constituency between 2007 and 2011 at the House of Representatives lawmaker said he opted out of the race in order to support another aspirant, Dr. Segun Abraham.
He said he took the decision after extensive consultation with some leaders and members of his political family.
Earlier, two other aspirants Dr. Paul Akintelure and Mr. Akinyinka Akinlola also announced their withdrawal from the race on Wednesday.
Akintelure, was the running mate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) governorship candidate Mr. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu SAN in 2012 election, while Akinlola, is the son of the late Lisa of Ondo Kingdom, High Chief Bayo Akinlola and they both threw their weights behind Mr. Segun Abraham.
In a statement signed by head of media and Publicity of Derin Adesida Campaign Organisation (DACO) Mr. Adeyemi Lebimoyo said the former lawmaker has decided to sacrifice his ambition because of his regard for the leadership of the party.
“Being a very strong politician from Akure, Adesida is poised to make winning easy for the APC in his town. Adesida is still ever formidable and a force to reckon with in Akure political circle. Stepping down from the race is to allow for the process to present our candidate to be less stressful
“While I know that some of my delegates who are battle ready to see that we clinch this ticket may be disappointed, I want to implore them to understand that party interest must override our personal ambitions. Clustered aspirations may hinder our party from taking over the Alagbaka government house.”
The development has reduced the number of aspirants from 24 to 21.

Chibok girls: Troops block Boko Haram’s supply routes

23:35 Add Comment
The Nigerian Army and the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) are tightening the noose round the  neck of Boko Haram  in the Lake Chad area, according to indications yesterday.

The troops  have blocked all supply routes to the insurgents in the build-up to the next stage   of liberating the over 200 Chibok girls abducted two years ago by the terrorists.
The blockade covers arms, ammunition and other logistics, highly placed sources told The Nation.
The  number of  MNJTF troops deployed in the Lake Chad Basin by Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger Republic  had hit   10,500 by yesterday.
The MNJTF forces are receiving intelligence and reconnaissance assistance  from France, Britain and the United States.
Nigeria has already released $80miilion (N33.440billion) of  the $100million it pledged to revitalize the MNJTF.
A top military source confirmed last night that the blockade was part of the ongoing Operation Crackdown against the insurgents.
But he explained that the troops   could not move  now  into the targeted part of Sambisa Forest because of the rains.
Sources said the marshy nature of the  area makes movement difficult at this time of the year.
Said one of the sources:“There is no doubt about the fact that we have blocked all supply routes of Boko Haram. These include supply of arms, ammunition and other logistics. If we don’t do so, we won’t have recorded the success at hand.
“This is not just a Nigerian issue;we have been able to bring our neighbouring countries on board. We are all working collectively for peace in  the Lake Chad Basin.
“We now have about 10,500 troops in the MNJTF already deployed in Lake Chad Basin in order to make it a battle to the finish.
“Some people did not believe that the MNJTF and the Nigerian Army could  succeed in defeating Boko Haram to this extent. We are, however, not relenting in our Operation Crackdown.”
The Federal Government  has already released about $86million (N33.440bn at N418 to a US$) of the $100million it pledged to the MNJTF.
The Secretary-General of the Lake Chad Basin Commission, Engineer Sanusi Imran Abdullahi, made the disclosure when the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buaratai, visited him in N’djamena.
The President had, in June 2015, approved the initial remittance of $21million.
The sum went up to  $86million by August 30 this year.
“This funding is part of what has helped the MNJTF to record a breakthrough against Boko Haram,” the source added.
Buhari had, on January 28, in Addis Ababa made the disclosure at a high-level meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council in Ethiopia.
He said: “Without peace, there will be no development. It is, therefore, vital for all of us to join hands in taking appropriate measures to end the conflicts and bring a stop to the incalculable damage being inflicted on innocent citizens in the affected countries.”
On the liberation of Chibok girls, the source claimed that a lot was being done by troops to locate and free them with other captives.
“We are working very hard. We have been following every lead, including information that they are in Sambisa Forest. Due to rainy season, we cannot move in now because if you are on foot, you cannot move more than 20 metres before you get stuck.
“Our troops have families too; they know what it takes to have these girls in captivity. We will do our best for these girls and will surmount all obstacles to set them free. That is why we are annoyed with those who have links with the insurgents.
“As soon as we are in the dry season, we will move into  the Sambisa Forest for a massive battle. As soon as it is accessible, we will go inside.
“We also have a joint partnership with France, Britain and the United States. They are assisting us with intelligence and reconnaissance in our operations against Boko Haram.”
On the planned  swapping of girls with Boko Haram commanders, the military source quipped: “That is a political issue; I am not for that. Leave this to political leadership. We are continuing with our operations.”
When contacted, the Army spokesman, Col. Kukasheka Usman, said: “We are on red alert 24 hours against the insurgents not only to free the Chibok girls but all captives and win the war once and for all.
“We are doing the best we could. Actually, so much is being done with other countries.

Navy to localise its training needs

23:25 Add Comment
Plans are underway to ensure that all training requirements of Nigerian Navy (NN) personnel are done in country.
This development was said to have been borne out of the need for home grown solutions to the security challenges facing the nation as well as the current economic realities.

Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) Vice Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas disclosed this Friday in Lagos during the graduation ceremony of participants of the Command Level Officers Course one.
The Nation reports that 15 Captains and seven Commanders were selected from different department of the NN for a four-week course at the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) QUORRA, Apapa, to further prepare them for command responsibilities.
Ibas who was represented by the Chief of Policy and Plans, Rear Admiral Jacob Ajani noted that the service was gaining grounds against criminals and economic saboteurs.
“As much as possible, most of our training activities are being harnessed domestically. That is not to say in areas of need and in order to benchmark; we do not send our personnel abroad. Remember that the navy is an international force and so, we send personnel out to interface with other colleagues so that we know how they are doing things.
“We are trying to localise for reasons of financial constraints which that will help address. We will continue to domesticate our training activities,” he said.
To Ibas, training must be continually reinvigorated through delibrate innovations to achieve desired goals.
“In this regard, the command level course provided a veritable means to fast track the delivery of a trained and ready force as the important linkage through quality leadership training to achieve command attributes.
“It is my hope that they have imbibed sufficient knowledge within the past one month to enable further self-development as they set to take command ashore or afloat,” he said.
On the fight against militants in the Niger Delta, Ibas said: “We are gaining grounds in Niger Delta. A lot of in roads have been made and are still being made. In no distant future, we will see the outcome. When you interface that with the political solution being advanced by the Federal government, lasting peace will reign in the Niger Delta soon.”
Earlier, the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Naval Training Command, Rear Admiral Ifeola Mohammed said that the course was a result of deep introspection.
“Our past operations and trainings as well as experiences with lessons learnt, served as the main ingredients for the course. I have no doubt that the course will fill the gaps, in past efforts as well as the renewed drive to meet present and future challenges, in operations in our maritime domain.
“Indeed, we are glad to state that we are developing the next generation of Naval Leaders,” he said.

Saudi-bound female pilgrim caught, excretes 76 pellets of cocaine

23:17 Add Comment
A 55-year-old female passenger’s planned pilgrimage to this year’s hajj came to an abrupt end at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, after she was arrested for alleged narcotic ingestion.

Basira Iyabo Binuyo has already excreted seventy-six (76) pellets of substances found to be cocaine, according to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
NDLEA officials at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Ikeja also intercepted a 37-year-old father-of-three for inserting seven wraps of cocaine weighing 355 grammes in his anus.
He was on his way to China.
Drug trafficking in both Saudi Arabia and China is punishable by death.
NDLEA commander at the Azikiwe Airport Abuja, Hamisu Lawan, said Binuyo is still under observation until she expels all the ingested pellets of drugs. “Mrs Binuyo was arrested during the outward screening of passengers on an Emirate flight to Medina through Dubai. She has so far excreted seventy-six (76) pellets of drugs that tested positive for cocaine. Meanwhile, she is still under observation until the drugs are completely expelled.”
Mrs Binuyo, from Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, is said to be a trader at Dosunmu Market in Lagos. She is married with three children.
She said in her statement to the NDLEA that she “wanted to expand my cosmetic business but I have no money.
“My sponsor offered to foot my expenses to Saudi on pilgrimage. I was excited until I was asked to take drugs along. I wanted to decline but considering the offer of a million naira, I accepted. I swallowed the drugs in Lagos and took a flight to Abuja on my way to Medina but I was caught in the process.”
The other suspect was found to have inserted seven wraps of cocaine weighing 355 grammes in his anus at the MMI. He was apprehended during outward screening of passengers on an Ethiopian Airline flight to Hong Kong, China through Addis Ababa.
NDLEA commander at the airport, Ahmadu Garba said that the suspect, who hails from Imo State, holds a dual citizenship of Nigeria and Mali.
He said: “He hails from Imo State but was travelling with a Malian international passport. The name on his passport is Diara Sauduo while his Nigerian name is Okpalanem Henry. The case is under investigation.”
The suspect, who expelled seven wraps of cocaine on his way to China,  said: “I know that there is capital punishment for drug trafficking in China but I was optimistic of safe passage. Unfortunately, I was caught with only seven wraps. Maybe that is my destiny. I am married with three children.”
Chairman/Chief Executive of the Agency, Col. Muhammad Mustapha Abdallah (rtd.) expressed satisfaction with the arrest, stating that it is a product of diligence and vigilance. “The arrest of the suspects is commendable. We will continue to be on the alert in protecting all exit and entry points from drug trafficking organisations. I am glad that the suspects were arrested here thus preventing them from untimely death and also protecting the image of our country from disrepute.”
